Be calm

One of the most important parts of driving is learning from your mistakes. You may see your teen make certain mistakes, but don’t point it out right away; let them figure it out by themselves. Stay calm and trust him/her to figure things out on their own. Let them be responsible for what they need to do, and stay calm by taking deep breaths.

Support your teen

It’s okay to make mistakes. If your teen feels guilty of making mistakes, support them by telling them it’s okay and making mistakes is how you learn. Help your teen out whenever you can while riding in the car and answer any questions you can to help them get better at driving.

Be aware of your body language

This refers back to staying calm. Make sure not to make any noises or gestures that may distract the driver – they need full attention on the road. Even if you are building tension and are worrying about the ride, try to stay as calm as possible in order for your driver to do the best they can.

Ask for recommendations

A great first step is to ask friends and family for their opinion. Ask them about their experience with the school they choose and why they chose that school. Did they have a positive experience? Would they recommend the school to you? What would they change, if they could? Keep all of these things in mind while you are on your search.

Look for reviews online

Do not just make a big commitment blindly. It is important that you do your own research online. Do a local search to see what comes up in your area. See what other people are saying. Look for positive or negative patterns. If many people are saying that they had a positive experience at a driving school, then it is likely that you will have a similar experience. If you are not satisfied with the results in your area, then branch out. Sometimes it is worth it to travel out of the neighborhood, if it means that you will get better service.

Visit the driving schools

Now you have done your own research, it is time to visit the schools. Make sure that the facility  is neat, clean, and organized. The condition of the facility is usually a good reflection of the driving school. A dirty and dingy office is usually a sign that the driving school is not up to par. One of the next things you should look for is a Driving School License. It should be prominently displayed in the office. Next, you should ask to see the classroom.  Remember, this is where you will be taking the 5 hour pre-licensing course, so you want to make sure that the room is bright, clean, and comfortable.

Ask to see the Cars

Most of your driving instruction will be taking place inside these vehicles, so you definitely want to check  this out. Driving school cars should be in good condition. Newer model cars are preferred due to their advanced safety features. Cars should have a rear-view mirror, exterior side mirrors, and a dual-brake for the instructor. Ask if the cars are properly insured. The cars should also be clearly identified as Student Driver cars. This is to make sure that other drivers know that you are a student driver and to be more cautious (and patient) around you.

Ask about Instructors

Your instructor will be your personal teacher and coach throughout your training. You want to make sure that they are qualified and experienced  to do the job. All instructors should be properly licensed by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. They should also have their Instructor Certificate card with them at all times. You should also make sure that the instructors are friendly and positive when you first meet them. The last thing you want is to take driving lessons with instructors who are inpatient and grumpy.

Ask about Pricing

Cost is a very important consideration when choosing a driving school. However, the best deal may not always be the best choice. With lower prices, you often sacrifice service, and you may end up paying more in the long run if you go with a cheaper school. Driving schools that offer unbelievably low prices often cut corners in other areas, so be mindful of this. Ask your potential driving school if they offer any packages or bundles. Usually, package deals can offer significant savings over individual listed prices.

Directions:  Belt Parkway – exit at Cropsey Avenue. Go South on Cropsey Avenue, make a right turn on Neptune Avenue, then a right turn on Bayview Avenue.

Red Hook Road Test Site

Address: On Bay Street – Between Hicks Street and Henry Street; Facing Henry Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231

Directions: Atlantic Avenue to Court Street, stay on Court past the elevated highway two blocks to Bay Street. Make right on Bay Street and go two blocks. Road Test area is between Hicks and Henry Streets.

Seaview Road Test Site

Address: Seaview Avenue and East 104th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11236

Directions: Take the Belt Parkway to Rockaway Parkway Exit. Stay on Rockaway Parkway going north to Seaview Avenue. Right turn onto Seaview Avenue. Stay straight on Seaview Avenue and pull over just before East 104th Street.

Starrett City Road Test Site

Address: On Flatlands Avenue – Between Pennsylvania Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue facing Van Siclen Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11239

Directions: Starrett City: Belt Parkway to Pennsylvania Avenue. Stay on Pennsylvania to Flatlands Avenue. Turn right onto Flatlands. Road test area is between Van Siclen and Pennsylvania Avenues.

Teens look up to their parents for support and guidance, it is to no surprise that a parent’s driving habits are an influential factor in determining how safely a teen drives. Driving habits can be learned starting from as early as the pre- teen years. It is important to start talking to your child about safe driving practices and their importance as early as possible. As the phrase “monkey see , monkey do” says, majority of the behavior that we practice is learned. Because teens see their parents as teachers, it is important for parents to behave as they would want their child to act. This is very essential when it comes to driving safety. As role models for your teens it is important that you practice these safe driving habits:

• Always use a seatbelt while driving

• Never use your cellphone or other electronic devices while driving

• Practice good driving manners, avoid tailgating and other unsafe driving habits which have to potential to lead to road rage

• Avoid road rage

• Speeding should be avoided at all costs, stay within the posted speed limits especially when your teen is present in the vehicle.

• While rolling through a stop may be tempting, a stop sign means stop. Teens need to stop first , then look and decide to proceed . So do you.

• Don’t race against the yellow lights, remember yellow signals for you to slow down not speed up.

• Use your signals, it helps other drivers on the road know of your future actions.
